“The field” is a self-composing, multi-channel audio-visual installation presenting the ongoing agro-pastoralist destruction of Country between Gaduband, Wadawurrung and Gulidjan lands. The work re-contextualises the lesser-noticed interruptions to Country in the reshaping of living Land, while providing an opportunity to reflect on some of the problematic non-specifics of imperialised perspectives.
Instigated from noticing rock piles from the roadside ‘in passing’ – through improvised modes of deviation, trespass and wandering, this installation has emerged from a focus on the overlaps between agropastoralist practices - their current and direct impacts on Country - and Place-representative, sound-art genericisms, while highlighting the generative and connective potential of transgressing internal boundaries within the imperialised self.

This installation forms part of Composite Radio’s 2026 commissioning program, a series of new audio works by Hayden Ryan, Edwina Stevens, Kirby Fary and Joy Zhou. Developed for live presentation and broadcast from Brunswick Mechanics Institute, the commissions extend Radio Composite’s ongoing program of experimental music, sonic art and critical conversation, bringing artists and audiences together through live performance, transmission and collective listening.
