Edwina Stevens is a Narrm-based audiovisual artist from Aotearoa/Te Wahi Pounamu. Her ongoing place-based practice engages improvisational processes of wandering and closer listening through varying techniques of sonic recording, responsive synthesis and found acoustic possibilities. With a focus on the incidental and unanticipated - producing works drawing on our potential to learn from the complex overlaps and dialogues in the details consistently present around us. Her processes accumulate to produce audiovisual works, compositions and installations, further expanded through performances, exhibitions, community conversations and collective wanderings.

Recently Edwina has been focusing on resonant engagements with infrastructure, transducing environmental recordings and harmonic modulating drone-frequencies through metals and other resonant materials. As a non-indigenous artist working on unceded lands, her projects intend to address continuing problematic colonial perspectives of place, specifically questioning western imperial concepts of ownership and control of land in so-called Australia and Aotearoa.

Edwina is currently undertaking a PhD at Deakin University, School of Communication and Creative Arts under the supervision of Cameron Bishop, Ann Wilson and cultural advisor Liz Cameron, researching the representation of place in audiovisual creative work. Through her ongoing creative research, Edwina wishes to further develop a respectful, responsible and resonant approach to the representation of place through audiovisual creative processes to encourage conversation within the wider community in questioning ongoing colonial perspectives.

Alongside her audiovisual installation practice, Edwina has played under the moniker of ‘eves’ since 2011 performing live visual and sound works across New Zealand and Australia (FFFFFF, eves). She has performed at local and international events such as Sonorous V (2022), Lines of Flight Festival Dunedin 2019, Ladyz In Noyz Australia 2017, Sisters Akousmatica Liquid Architecture/Next Wave Festival 2016, Nowhere Festival Auckland 2014 and Make It Up Club Melbourne, recorded and released 3 albums (eves.bandcamp.com) and was nominated for The Age Music Victoria Awards/Best Experimental-Avante Garde Act for 2015.

Edwina has also established, operated and curated within two project spaces within New Zealand, None Gallery (Dunedin, 2006-2012) and Rice and Beans (Dunedin, 2011-2012). The two spaces frequently exhibited and hosted artists locally and internationally as a no-cost, open space for experimental artists and their practices.
