Edwina Stevens (Dunedin, Aotearoa/Melbourne) is an audiovisual artist working across live performance, installation and spatial sound design. Her work investigates the 'sound of place' via composition, improvisation and performance, working with analogue signal frequencies/synthesis, found acoustic instruments, site-specific acoustic elements and field recordings.

The 'sound of place' explores the sensory, almost synaesthesic phenomena of temporal transference or artist as medium for transmutation of the recorded sonic experience of place as emotional resonance. Her minimal and haunting soundscapes specifically relate to experiences of remoteness, where time behaves differently, occasionally induced further by minimal cinematic imagery. A substantial amount of Edwina’s work has been produced during self-directed residencies and impromptu travel.

Edwina’s audiovisual practice has been exhibited as part of group shows and collaborations, in the form of installations, radio pieces and screenings, such as at Incinerator Gallery (Melbourne 2019), Radiophrenia (Centre of Contemporary Art, Glasgow 2019), Radia Network (commissioned radio piece, European network 2018), ABC Spotlight Audible Women (Melbourne 2017), Melbourne Environmental Film Festival (Melbourne 2015), Blue Oyster Gallery (Dunedin, 2011), Artspace (Auckland, 2010), HSP (Christchurch, 2010), None Gallery (Dunedin), The Anteroom (Dunedin). A recent documentary style sound-work collaboration with Carly Fischer has been accepted to be broadcast as part of Radiophrenia 2019 at Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Art, after beingexhibited as part of a multi-channel sound and sculptural installation at Incinerator Gallery in March 2019.

Aside from her audiovisual installation practice, Edwina has played under the moniker of ‘eves’ since 2011 performing live visual and sound works across New Zealand and Australia (FFFFFF, eves). She has played in collaborative and self-structured events and tours such as Lines of Flight Festival Dunedin 2019, Ladyz In Noyz Australia 2017, Sisters Akousmatica Liquid Architecture/Next Wave Festival, Signal 2016, Nowhere Festival Auckland 2014 and Make It Up Club Melbourne, recorded and released 3 albums (eves.bandcamp.com) and was nominated for The Age Music Victoria Awards/Best Experimental-Avante Garde Act for 2015.

Edwina also performs as one half of the experimental noise duo Torrential Brain with Jennifer Tait and as bass player in long-running Dunedin noise rock band Thee Aesthetics.

Aside from her own practice, Edwina has also established, operated and curated within two project spaces within New Zealand, None Gallery (Dunedin, 2006-2012) and Rice and Beans (Dunedin, 2011-2012). The two spaces frequently exhibited and hosted artists locally and internationally as a no-cost, open space for experimental artists and their practices.

Edwina is currently undertaking a Research Masters Degree at Deakin University, School of Communication and Creative Arts under the supervision of Cameron Bishop and Ann Wilson, researching ‘the sound of place’, specifically researching the methodologies of transmutation of place via the sound artist.
